Beswicks Art Prize 2009

Throughout 2008-09 Beswicks Solicitors has hosted an exhibition of around 40 paintings by students, aged from 14 to 18, from Newcastle Under Lyme School in their offices at  Alexander House, in Hanley.

For the second year, staff have voted on their favourite piece of artwork.  Prizes will be presented at the school prizegiving and the winning pieces this year are:

Art 09 - Painting by Qing Zhou
Winner: Qing Zhou                                                Runner up:  Georgina Griffiths

“Having visited the Art Department at Newcastle-under-Lyme School, I was extremely impressed with the work on display,” comments managing partner, Simon Woodings.  “It is fantastic to see such talent locally and the young artists deserve every encouragement.”

Beswicks’ head office at Alexander House in Hanley is a listed building.  With its high ceilings it clearly had potential to display a number of works of art and the firm approached Philip Dare, Head of Art at Newcastle-under-Lyme School to see if the students would be interested in exhibiting at their offices.

Phillip Dare commented “All the work is firmly rooted in direct observation. Once the necessary skills are understood, the pupils have the opportunity to develop their ideas through the complexity of composition and a wide variety of materials.  The pupils are encouraged to pursue their own individual goals within a framework of quality and excellence.”
