Snow in June for Beswicks intrepid Three Peaks Challenge
On Friday 13th June 2008 , two teams from Beswicks Solicitors “Formula 1’s” and the “Formula 40’s” set out on a challenge issued by North Staffordhsire Chamber of Commerce President, Bob Young of Begbies Traynor, to complete the 3 peaks challenge in aid of the Donna Louise hospice, a hospice for children and young people in Trentham, Stoke- on-Trent. The challenge is to climb Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell Pike within 24 hours
Beswicks enlisted the support of clients, friends and colleagues and together we are on target to raise over £3,000 in sponsorship.
Transport was provided by our clients. The Wardle Group in the form of 2 mini buses, the Wardle Group are great supporters of charity events such as this and we would like to say a big thank you to Mark Wardle who organised the buses for us and allowed us to “go feral” in them for the duration of the challenge. Mark even joined us for the Snowdon part of the challenge!
The team included Simon Woodings, Gary Mellor, Michael Stephenson, Joanne McGuinness, Tim Bailey, Nicola Quinlan, Richard Preston, Andrew Turnock, Hayley Kennedy, Anne Scheland, Gareth Wilkinson, Richard Simmons, Rob Welsh, Elayna Smith and Kevin Spruce
We set off early on Friday moning arriving at Ben Nevis to start to walk at 5.00pm. The team walked through fresh snow and a blizzard approaching the summit of Ben Nevis, which for mid-june was somewhat uncalled for but added to the fun.
At Scafell Pike on the summit we were asked to take part in a survey by two fellas in a tent. They were from The National Trust encouraging people not to treat the 3 Peaks as a race due to the environmental impact (they’d obviously seen the inside our minbus) caused by upwards of 18,000 people each summer doing just that. So we promised them we wouldn’t reveal our times and left them in the clouds.
At Snowdon, the Formula 1s were joined by many supporters from our office (the Formula 40’s having taken a little more time and actually having stopped along the way for food ,were a little late), so Beswicks staff kids and dogs led the final assault on what was judged by all to be a very successful event, both for the charity and for the Beswicks teams.
The teams drivers and Mark Wardle seemed to find reserves of energy in the hotel bar on Saturday evening and a good time was had by all.
So thanks Bob for the challenge, and to our sponsors for supporting us. We had a great time, but one of those times perhaps enjoyed best looking back, rather than through the cloud, hail and mini bus window.
