Cheap online divorce might sound like the perfect solution, but, as 28 people recently found, it can end up costing more in the long run.
Family court judge Mr Justice Moor dismissed 28 divorce petitions from the same company after he discovered that each petition contained identical wording.
The judge described it as ‘quite impossible’ for each of the 28 respondents to have behaved in exactly the same way, concluding that the petitions were, therefore, ‘improper’.
What had happened was that a cheap online divorce company that was unregulated had churned out the petitions using standard wording.
Their clients were sent the wording and asked to feedback if anything in the petition was incorrect, which it seems, none of them did.
Of course, for the respondents, they now find themselves in the position of having to throw good money after bad, starting from scratch with their petitions, hopefully this time instructing experienced and reputable solicitors.
The cheap online divorce firm was itself lucky to escape a reference to the Director of Public Prosecutions for perverting the course of justice.
The truth is that there is no substitute for a fully qualified, experienced family solicitor who can guide you through your divorce.
Even if you believe your circumstances to be straight-forward and uncontentious, a swift and lasting resolution is only possible if a legal professional handles your petition in the correct way.
As the old saying goes, you really do get what you pay for.
