Do DIY divorces work? Family Law

A DIY divorce is much-talked-about as a way of driving down the cost of divorce and avoiding acrimonious and expensive court proceedings.

While it is relatively cheap to file your own divorce papers, making sure you get the outcome you want is likely to take a little more work

Some websites offer ‘quickie divorces’ for less than £100, but you will still need to pay court fees of £593.

Also, be aware that even if you have agreed to make no financial claims against each other if matters are not formalised correctly within a financial consent order and approved by the court, then the financial ties between you are not severed upon divorce. This means that there is nothing to stop either of you from applying to the court for financial provision from the other later on and there is no limitation period (save for in certain circumstances) for financial claims.
